Hungry

2 min read
I've been hungry most my life.  Some artists win awards, find mentors, get discovered.  Me, I've had to do it the hard way.  Almost everything I learned I learned the hard way -- books, libraries, and in the new millennium online tutorials.  Big ups to Scott McDaniel -- the very first tutorial I read and simply the best out there.  When I started looking at art as a career -- animation was dead.  I graduated high school when there was no animation going on -- pre Little Mermaid.  Before Disney realized that little kids still watched cartoons.  The comic book industry was at it's heyday -- the industry was strong,  Black and whites just hit the market, regular retailers still carried comic books.  No break, no luck, no mentor.  I did background inks, spotted Blacks, backgrounds, ghosted pages, anything to keep drawing -- because I was hungry.  For years I've worked on the edge.  A few images here and there -- pin ups, character designs, toy designs, not enough to support myself, not enough to fill the hunger.  Try-outs, I've had a few.  I was finally told -- to show them that you can and want to work you have to work.  So this year I set out to self publish with a Xeric grant, rejected this time.  The experience was worth the effort.  Realizing that I could put together the project.  Realizing that I could make it happen for myself, because no one has tried to make it happen for me.  Not that people didn't want to work with me.  No one wanted to pay for the work is all.  Everyone wanted my time, supplies, and efforts, without pay.  "We get published you get paid." or  "I've got this ideal that's going to set the industry on fire!" or "I've got a deal with Image and you just have to do these pages, designs, and...."  Not that I'm a total mercenary, but I do want some respect for the time and effort I put into the work.  I'm willing to get paid back end, if the person is real about the deal, meaning that he already has the deal set, not "draw 1000 pages, then we'll see about getting it published."  I'm ready to get published in a comic book.  You see regardless of all that.  I'm still hungry.

I felt that this was the time.  I felt that everything was aligned properly to get things done.  However, everyone conspired against me.  Certainly it was all for the familial good.  Everyone thrived, and benefited, and flourished, but me.  My art time was stolen, my nest egg for art supplies was conscripted, my whine is sooo tired.

I benefited, explored different styles, rewrote scripts, perfected so much.  I've gone to work for the evil empire: Google.  I enjoy the work -- I'm a business photographer in my home town. Some of you suckers work for Marvel -- I laugh at you.  My art is my own and I suddenly learned to value that freedom.  My stories and scripts will be my own.  Would I work for the big boys?  Of course, its what most of us started with.  Getting our version of Superspider or Manly Captain Man published, would be a feather in our cap regardless.  Its just not my only goal.  I have a bigger dream than that, and family is a part of it.  Self publishing is about leaving my family something of myself, undiluted by the powers that be in comics.

So back to work, gather my funds, and prepare to publish.  I'm excited.

New Day

Time to do it right.  I am finishing the worst part -- getting my computer sites ready.  Cleaning up my posts and cleaning up my computer.  I will be upgrading my equipment and software. Preparing everything so that I can focus on the creative parts of my works.
